Ten years of Madeiran friendship

MADEIRAN and Portuguese Islanders are being invited to the Royal Square on Saturday afternoon to meet the president of Madeira.

Dr Alberto Joao Jardim, who was elected in 1978, is in Jersey this weekend to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the historic ‘friendship agreement’ between the islands.

After a ceremony in the Old Library of the States Building, Dr Jardim and his wife will meet members of the public at 12.45 pm in the Royal Square.

Madeiran Islanders are being encouraged to take advantage of a rare opportunity to meet the man who has led Madeira for 30 years.

The Bailiff is hoping that as many members as possible of the local Portuguese and Madeiran communities will turn out to meet their president.
