This wee snippet is written on the morning of Monday, May 12th. During the past week messages have flown in via cyber-space from a variety of countries from folks who will arrive on Jersey over the next week.
One evening last week I turned on my Blackberry and found a message from long-time Jersey enthusiast Ken Nunokawa of Japan. He was preparing to head for England and the pre-conference tour. Then Phil and Amy Nicholson of Australia e-mailed to note that they were “counting the sleeps” till they left for England and the same tour! They reported that 23 Aussies will be on Jersey. I knew from our Canuck travel agent that our band of Canadians would top out at 33.
In addition I had heard from young Wikus Van der Merwe in South Africa. Wikus is one of five regional World Jersey Cattle Bureau Jersey Educational Travel Award recipients for 2008. Unlike the Nicholsons Wikus was not counting sleeps but trying to figure out how he was going to calm himself enough so that he would get even a minute of sleep before his scheduled departure date of May 15! I’ll meet Wikus and Poena Van Niekirk and Poena’s Dad, who is one of South Africa’s leading Jersey breeders, at Gattwick on May 16 for our quick hop over to Jersey! We’ve also had numerous contacts with folks in the USA who are so excited about getting to Jersey!
Therefore, the eyes of the Jersey world are now focused on a tiny, unique, glorious, special little island in the English Channel, our “home place”!
Those ‘pumped people” who will be arriving at Jersey in recent days know that they are coming to the ancestral home of the breed we all love and value so very much! But they are also anticipating a bevy of other scenic and breath-taking wonders too and they will not be disappointed!
Hours fly by as we prepare and get jobs done so we can leave home with a relatively clear conscience!
The populace on Jersey, I hope, knows how blessed you all are to live in such an appealing and magnetic corner of the world!
The cows and talk of cows and agricultural topics will be important-but even more educational and enjoyable will be the mix of folks from the far corners of the world and our wondrous hosts on Jersey and all that Jersey has to offer in terms of natural and manmade wonders!
Can hardly wait-and it is now down to a matter of hours, rather than months or days or even weeks, till time on Jersey, beautiful Jersey!
Anticipation has reached fever pitch!!
