A warning to immigrants

IMMIGRANTS from Thailand, Kenya, and other non-European countries could soon have to prove that they can speak English before being allowed into Jersey.

Immigration chiefs are considering following the UK by tightening up entry requirements for those wanting to live and work in the Island.

From October, anyone applying to work in the UK from a non-EU country, including professional footballers, must be able to speak and understand basic English.

If the initiative is adopted in the Island, it would follow the introduction in January of new language requirements for those wishing to live in Jersey permanently.
