Controversial pension plan rejected by parish

A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to change St Helier parish workers’ pension rights was defeated last night.

Parishioners voted by 68 to 53 at a meeting at the Town Hall to reject a move that would have permanently prevented new staff from becoming members of the Public Employee Contributory Retirement Scheme.

For 15 manual workers employed on temporary contracts, the decision means that today they will join all States workers and become permanent staff who are entitled to join the scheme.

It was a lively meeting with a great deal of applause and at times loud boos and jeers as the audience reacted to speakers’ views.
