My hero!

Eleven-year-old Joshua Zomparelli saved his brother Finlay’s life just a week after learning first aid skills at school.

Joshua, who is in Year 6 at St John’s Primary School, said that when he saw his brother choking, he just acted on impulse.

‘I was upstairs and my mum started shouting to me. I ran downstairs and asked her what the matter was and she said that Finlay was choking, so straight away I bent him over my leg and hit him on the back like I had learned at school,’ said Joshua.

‘I was so glad that I had learned how to do this, otherwise Finlay might not be here now.’

Since Christmas first aiders Teresa Surcouf and Rachel Stamps have been running a St John Ambulance course for children in Years 5 and 6 at the school.
