JERSEY’S Beckie Herbert did her chances of Olympic selection for Beijing no harm at all by scoring the opening goal in Great Britain women’s hockey test victory over a powerful Argentina outfit yesterday.
The 4-2 victory at Reading left coach Danny Kerry elated: ‘The scoreline is fantastic, but actually what is more fantastic is the group. I’m really proud of the girls and how they’ve put things into practice - and as a coach you cant really ask for much more than that.’
Herbert (21), a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist with England, notched her first GB test goal after just six minutes, turning home a cross from the left.
Argentina, ranked No 2 in the World, were level at half time, but after a goal-bound Herbert shot was deflected behind by a defender’s stick the GB team poured on the pressure to score through Laura Bartlett, Hayley Brown and Mel Clewlow.
