Sharp’s ordeal ends with a smile

finish3_cropped.jpgIF Jersey sailor Phil Sharp is superstitious he might find it a fitting end to his Figaro Transat AG2R race that he crossed the line 24 days 23 hours 13 minutes and 13 seconds after he started.

Sailing Atlantik FT with David Krizek the team, who were supported by Dominion, were severely punished for their decision to stay on a northerly route and yesterday were the last boat in the fleet to finish as several others had pulled out.

‘It’s not the result I wanted at all but the main thing is that we got across as some of the boats didn’t make it so we should feel pleased,’ said Sharp from the Caribbean island of St Bart’s.

‘There were quite a few boats to see us in and it was a lovely experience. There was one boat making a lot of noise setting off fireworks so will have woken the whole town and all other skippers who had already got in.’
