New homes at 35% discount

ew__00534294_cropped.jpgPROPOSALS that will allow families to buy a new house at a discounted price were unveiled today.

If the States approve the Jersey Homebuy scheme devised by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen, a percentage of new homes on all first-time buyer sites will be reserved for people buying through the scheme. From today, people can register their details to apply to be able to buy a house for 65 per cent of full market value.

It is expected that with rocketing property prices there will be a clamour from Islanders desperate to find a way on to the ladder. It was announced today that the average price of a three-bedroom house sold in the first quarter of 2008 was £510,000.

Jersey Homebuy is similar to the shared equity scheme that Senator Cohen promised as an election pledge. First-time buyers who believe that they will qualify are being asked to write to Jersey Homebuy Registration c/o the Housing department.
