Danehill Dazzler to shine in Vase

mono2colsplease_cropped.jpgSEVERAL horses have arrived in the Island since the Jersey Race Club’s spring events, resulting in 44 runners having stood their ground at the five-day declaration stage for Monday’s Warwick Vase meeting.

The feature event of the five races is, of course, the Mitie Warwick Vase.  Nine horses are involved, with the top weights from Stephen Arthur’s yard, namely Danehill Dazzler and Catcando.

It is probable all runners representing this senior trainer will be fitter than early season, if the pattern of previous years is followed.

John Poynton’s and B Morton’s Danehill Dazzler finished the 2007 season with two wins and is now the highest rated horse in training on the flat.  Only beaten a nose and a head into third place last time, a win is probably considered overdue and this mare could be the favourite.

Stable companion Catcando, owned by Des Ahier, was almost unbeatable three seasons ago over slightly shorter distances, but has only raced infrequently since, due to injuries.  His first two races this year should have increased fitness and an improved performance is expected.

Alyson Malzard is represented by Siakira, Jilvaro and Sans Sa Dame.  Jilvaro won in facile fashion on Easter Monday but disappointed the following occasion.  A repeat of the early season form would put him among the favourites. Sans Sa Dame has been runner up on his first two outings, and beat Danehill Dazzler by a head last time.
