JERSEY deservedly beat Singapore by 93 runs at Grainville yesterday although, as captain Matt Hague said afterwards, there is still room for improvement.
‘Too many dropped catches,’ he said, ‘and we had to work hard with the bat for our 189. But this is a very good team and we’re frightened of nobody. We can only get better.’
For coach Peter Kirsten, his only complaint was Jersey’s score, after they had been been put into bat. ‘We were hoping for 220,’ he said, ‘but I was pleased by our openers while we’ve been working on scoring runs at the tail-end, instead of just hanging around.’
The only contentious moment after an opening partnership of 69 between Steve Carlyon (25) and Peter Gough, was man-of-the-match Gough’s dismissal in the 35th over for 69.
The umpire judged that the ball had carried behind to Suryawanshi, while most of the crowd believed it had been played into the ground first.
By now the score had moved on to 125, and although there was a mini slump when Ryan Driver and Tony Carlyon were out to Singapore’s impressive Anish Param (2 for 21 at 2.1), with Hague going for 3 and Jonny Gough bowled by Mohn Madakia for 1, the tail did, indeed wag. Sachin Patidar carried his bat for 21, Bobby Minty scampered 22 quick runs before being run out and Bradley Vowden (13) hit a huge six before he was caught on the boundary two balls later.
After that, according to Kirsten, Jersey’s opening bowlers, Chris Jones and Ryan Driver: ‘both bowled beautifully, with Ryan in particular finding a brilliant line from his opening ball.’
