Homes flooded after heavy rain

0563780_cropped.jpgFLASH floods caused chaos after heavy downpours hit the Island last night.

Some First Tower residents battled to protect their homes from the rising water levels and a toyshop in town suffered extensive damage when rain burst through the ceiling of a flat three floors above.

The Fire and Rescue Service received around 30 calls in just three hours. Station manager Robin King said that they worked until midnight in ‘atrocious conditions’ to help pump out floodwater from people’s homes.

‘Most calls were related to property flooding and fire-fighters made internal electrics safe. The service also dealt with landslides and roadway flooding and helped several elderly people,’ he said.

‘As you can imagine, it is quite distressing when you have water pouring through your door. We cleaned up water for a number of residents in First Tower.’
