THE Guernsey Football Association are hoping to relaunch the Jeremie Cup as a Channel Islands Champions Knockout as a result of the rising cost of inter-island travel.
They are proposing that the actual Jeremie Cup, which was first played for in 1902, be presented to the winners of the event. In the new competition the top four sides from each island would play a straight knockout and take advantage of the ferry services available in late summer.
Jeff Vidamour, the GFA’s director for cups, leagues and grounds, said that the board was reacting to comments that the CI cups were becoming stale and the costs prohibitive, especially for the Jersey sides. It is thought that Grouville’s recent Jeremie Cup run cost them over £7,000.
Jersey Football Combination president Tim Darwin said: ‘In principle it is a good idea, but it needs to be agreed between the three parties – the GFA, JFC and the JFA, who run the Wheway Cup. The issue is whether clubs can continue to absorb the cost of travelling between the islands.
