ANOTHER powerful performance on day four of the Jeux des Iles in Guadeloupe has boosted Jersey’s medal count to 15.
Seven medals, including a third gold, is making Jersey’s stated aim of finishing in the top ten teams look a far too modest target.
The athletes continued their fine form with Zane Duquemin taking gold in the discus, to go with his silver in shot the previous day, with a throw of 49.96m.
Jersey featured twice on the podium in the 800m, with Felicity Johnson-Deeley in second and Nicola Milner third while Lisa Luce won a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles.
In the pool Tom Gallichan won a silver medal in the 400m individual medley and a bronze in the 200m freestyle to complete his set of silverware, while Charlotte Manning stepped on to the podium for the second time in Guadeloupe as she took silver in the 100m breast-stroke.
Max Tupper and Scott Cassin are through to the knockout stages of the individual table tennis competition after winning two of their three group matches. However, Luke Walker did not progress to the last 32.
The tennis teams both suffered defeats and will now play off for fifth to eighth place. The boys’ team of Scott Clayton and George Dupays lost both singles and their doubles match to the Canary Islands in straight sets and tomorrow play the Azores.
The girls came closer to progressing, taking on Martinique, as although Alyssia Johnson lost her singles, Octavia Lamb won her match 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 to make the doubles contest a crucial one.
The Jersey pair took a 6-1 lead but lost the second set 6-0 before squandering a 3-0 lead in the third to lose 6-4 and with it the match – they too now play the Azores who they lost to on day one.
There is little change in the overall positions in the sailing events as Laurence Carter took 15th and 13th in the two races yesterday and remains 16th overall; George Moisan was 21st and 17th and remains 18th. Elizabeth Ellison finished 15th and 18th and is now 16th in the girls’ event.
The surfing competition gets under way today, after being postponed for a day, and the finals of the men’s individual gymnastics takes place. It is the final day of the swimming, athletics, table tennis and sailing.
