JERSEY could again have a railway running from the west to town.
Representatives of a leading transport company are visiting the Island this week to talk to politicians about the feasibility of creating a light railway or tram system.
Experts from Transdev were invited to the Island by the Environment Scrutiny panel and will meet representatives of the Transport and Technical Services department and the Environment department.
The visit comes at the instigation of Scrutiny panel member Deputy Paul Le Claire. The Deputy said: ‘I have always thought there was room for a light railway or tram system. I put the idea to the panel and they asked me to look into options.’
He said that he had spoken to a number of expert businesses and the visit of Transdev on Thursday was the first tangible step into assessing feasibility and potential costs.

If its anything like Connex they wont be regular and 2 turn up at once
Well they should have had something like this many years ago! I hope it goes ahead, it will make such a big difference, as the traffic problem has not changed also for many years!
This will mever get off of the ground.
Capital expenditure costs for Civils, P/way, Signalling & Telecoms, electrification, buildings (termini) , rolling stock & any compulsory purchase of land will be in the region of £ 250 m.
Now factor in operations and maintenance costs, skill sets that Jersey does not have, factor in forecast passenger numbers & projected revenue streams and work out how long it would take to achieve a return on investment.
“Can we have a tube train too please and a Disney land park! Oh and lets have one of those Gondola
theme rides and an Ice Rink. You can then plaster large advertisement signs on every thing, and charge us locals a fortune to use them and get 5%GST on top of that.” Brilliant Idea!!;0)
What a Great idea, ease traffic congestion and also a tourist attraction on a coastal route. First lets get the Bridge to France built first and see what is left in the pot before going full steam ahead on this project. Any logically decision takes time and its like the BIG wheel, it just goes around and around. Welcome Transdev with open arms they are a publically listed company who we should trust.
I think it is a brilliant idea, from say, Gorey to St. Helier? A project I also think, that could easily be financed from the wealth of the Island.
I thought Jersey was short of money, hence GST etc!
How can we afford this? I thought GST was for the black hole.
I still do not understand why the Island needs a clock that blows bubbles, a upside down boat, a statue of a toad and recently a big wheel and know this.
It really does not seem that we are struggling for money, but then with GST I suppose we are not.
When is this all going to stop!
Come back Don Pallot all is forgiven !
Get a load of jeepneys instead
C.Brady you forgot the bridge to France!
Im from canada and I think this is a great idea. Hope it works out.Have similar system here and works great.Environment friendly as well.
I think it would be a better idea if we could somehow build a monorail from say St Aubin into town, above the cycle run maybe. But we would have to find room for peiple to park their cars so they can leave them and catch the monorail into town.
This bean has been away for six months and is sure when she gets home again she won’t be sure if she’s in Blackpool or Jersey!
