EVEN the police would call it bizarre. A series of thefts has broken out in the Island – and the targets are trampoline mats.
Four separate mats have now been stolen in the last fortnight. Thieves have entered fields or gardens in Trinity, St Helier and St Martin to take the mats and the springs attached to them in a spate of what the police call ‘unusual thefts’.
The JEP reported the first theft at St Catherine’s Hill, St Martin, after being contacted by mother-of-two Andrea Rombaut. Police said that it looked as if two people had come into the family’s meadow and unhooked 72 springs with a special tool before taking the mat.
Since that incident there have been three further thefts around the Island.
Anne Neal, of Trinity, who has three children, noticed that her trampoline mat had gone missing overnight on Monday 2 June.
‘They took 84 springs and the jumping mat, leaving the frame and safety mat around the edge.’
Another trampoline mat was stolen from a property in Abbey Close, off Queen’s Road, overnight on Friday 23 May, but it was only reported to police after the article appeared in the JEP.
