Jersey claim another British Isles bowls title

britishisleschamps08_cropped.jpgA JERSEY men’s bowls team are the latest to triumph in a national competition.

Following hard on the heels of Lindsey Greechan’s success in the British women’s championships in Belfast last week, Jersey trio John Rowcliffe, Alan Shaw and Cyril Renouf lifted the British men’s triples title in Llandrindod Wells yesterday.

Renouf’s men came through a grueling final encounter with Welsh champions Gareth Jones, Martin Selway and Ian Henderson, but stamped their authority over the last two ends to win by a convincing 20-13 scoreline.

‘At last!’ said Jersey’s resilient middle man, ‘Lofty’ Shaw, ‘That’s my fourth British final, but the first I’ve managed to win.’

Rowcliffe, Shaw and Renouf were together in the four that lost to Ireland in 2002, but this time they made no mistake, matching their Welsh opponents wood-for-wood and end-for-end, for the first 16 ends.
