Jersey donation row ends in resignation

A POLITICAL donations row in which Jersey-based multi-millionaire Paul Green was a key figure led to the resignation of Scottish Labour party leader Wendy Alexander at the weekend.

She stood down after being banned from the Scottish Parliament for one day for failing to register eight donations to her party leadership campaign as gifts within the set timescale.

Mr Green (pictured) was innocently dragged into the major controversy about illegal donations to the party last November. He publicly expressed his anger after learning that Glasgow MSP Charlie Gordon said Mr Green made a donation to Ms Alexander’s leadership campaign through a UK company.

The defence was mounted as it is against the law for non-UK residents to make donations directly to political parties. However, Mr Green had written a personal cheque for £950 and received a letter of thanks from Ms Alexander posted to his home in St Martin. He spoke of his anger at the time and exclusively released details to the JEP of Ms Alexander’s personal letter. Today he said that he did not wish to comment ‘as enough has been said already’ about the issue.
