Round Britain crew cheered by leg win

00568131_cropped.jpgTEAM Jersey have been celebrating the success of their Round Britain bid following a euphoric home stretch on Monday that saw them finish first in their class.

The win was the ‘icing on the cake’ for the team, led by two-times World champion skipper Roy Smith, who were dogged by bad luck from the start. Ground crew member Jo Jeffery said: ‘The first half of the race, up to Oban, was very, very tough.

‘We had to retire from the first leg because of an electrical fault, then the second leg was cancelled because of severe weather, and then one of the crew was injured on the third leg. But once we turned a corner at Inverness we seemed to enjoy it much more, and then we won the final race which was fantastic.’

Some superb results towards the end of the 1,500 nautical mile race pushed the team up into an overall eighth place in the Sports Boats and RIBs (27ft-33ft) class and secured a 32nd place finish out of a 45-strong fleet.
