HOTEL staff were praised for their quick evacuation of guests after a fire broke out at a hotel in St Brelade early yesterday morning.
The fire started inside a tumble dryer in the laundry room at the Atlantic Hotel at 5 am and three fire engines and a part-time fire crew from the Western Station were sent to put out the blaze. No one was hurt and everyone at the hotel was quickly evacuated.
Station Manager Marc Le Cornu said that the joint Fire and Rescue Service / JEP campaign called Make a Plan sought to illustrate how important it was to have a strategy in place.
‘This incident enforces the message that our current campaign is trying to send out, as the hotel’s working fire detection system and efficient escape plan prevented any guests or staff members being trapped or injured at this incident,’ he said.
Atlantic Hotel staff were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and after they found the fire they evacuated all of the staff and guests who were all accounted for before the fire brigade arrived.
Firemen using breathing apparatus quickly put out the fire and used a fan to remove the smoke and prevent it from entering other parts of the hotel.
Guests were allowed back into the main hotel area, which was unaffected by the fire, shortly after. The JEP launched the campaign a few weeks ago and firefighters have been visiting homes across the Island to give advice and fit free smoke alarms.
The home fire safety visits revealed that about half of Islanders lacked any form of fire detection with no smoke alarms or only one.
