THE new Weighbridge square could be transformed into a French-style al-fresco eating and drinking area, it has been revealed.
The cobbled square has deliberately been left sparse so that local restaurants and bars can apply for outdoor dining areas and the site can be used to stage fairs, markets and other events.
However, Planning Minister Freddie Cohen said that only applications for high-quality al-fresco areas will be considered. He said: ‘A lot of work has gone in to ensuring that the Weighbridge is a high-quality development. We wouldn’t want this to be ruined by inappropriate al-fresco eating and drinking areas.
‘People are seeing the Weighbridge in its virgin state at the moment, but if we get the right applications and manage them properly we will be able to recreate the feel of a European square.’
