A DONATION of £807 which was sent by a Jersey business to help displaced people in Kenya has provided vital food and supplies to families there.
The funds were donated by Kenyan coffee importers Cooper & Co. It was through his professional coffee associates that Coopers proprietor David Warr was able to make contact with a coffee broker from Kenya living in London who put him in touch with Omondi Kasidhi of the Clinton foundation in Kigali, Rwanda.
Mr Warr explained that he had decided to make the donation on the basis that Jersey Pottery was raising funds by buying Kenyan coffee for all their outlets for up to six weeks. ‘I calculated the number of kilos they had bought and decided to match it and the people in Kenya came back with a list of things they needed.’
Many families were made homeless when inter-ethnic violence broke out during the general elections at the end of last year, particularly in Nairobi province and some parts of the Rift Valley. During the riots hundreds of people were killed, with around 350,000 forced to leave their homes for communal camps set up in showgrounds, church compounds and police stations.
