ZANE DUQUEMIN struck gold at the Sainsbury’s English Schools Track and Field Championships and earned praise from Olympic decathlon legend Daley Thompson.
Duquemin, 16 and a student at De La Salle College, won the intermediate (U17) boys discus on Saturday, the second and final day of the championships, held at the Gateshead International Stadium.
His winning distance was 49.20 metres.
Traditionally recognised as the highlight of the English Schools calendar these Gateshead Championships lived up to all expectations. In mixed weather conditions over 1,600 talented young athletes, from almost every county in England, thrilled the crowd with some noteworthy performances.
Daley Thompson, Sainsbury’s ambassador to the English Schools athletics programme, watched the Championships unfold with interest. He commented: ‘Every year at the Sainsbury’s English Schools Track and Field Championships we see some fantastic performances. This year was no different. Zane put in a tremendous effort, thoroughly deserving of his gold medal as well as the title of 2008 Sainsbury’s English Schools Championship U17 Boys Intermediate Champion.’
