Watching the metal detectors

00572109_2_cropped.jpgPLANNING has reassured worried metal detectors that their hobby will not be banned in the Island.

The Jersey Metal Detecting Society reformed earlier this year after fears that archaeologists wanted to put restrictions on its searches.

Talks between Planning Minister Freddie Cohen, the Jersey Heritage Trust and the society have revealed that there was some confusion over the sites which the group were allowed to use metal detectors on.

Society president Reg Mead, who has 30 years’ experience in the field, said: ‘Because we didn’t have any representation, for a while there was a misunderstanding when we addressed the issue with the Planning department.
