THE States have agreed to lift the ban on bull semen imports into the Island.
A proposal to end the 220-year ban on importing semen, tabled by Chief Minister Frank Walker and backed by Scrutiny, was approved by 34 votes to 15. The vote was taken this afternoon after nearly two days of debate.
Supporters of the move, which would also allow semen from other breeds imported for beef cattle, say it could increase the milk yield of Jersey’s dairy cows by up to 50%.
But detractors say it threatens the purity of the world-famous Jersey cow, and will have a profound cultural effect on the Island.

So, Frank & Co have yet again implented something that will result in the demise of a unique part of the heritage of Jesey. But, hey, all we want is the finance industry so why worry!!!
I thought that Jersey Dairy had more milk produced than required and poured away millions of pints - so why are they so intent on increasing yield further?
So Frank has killed another 200+ year tradition - we can never say he hasn’t left his mark on the island.
As a Jerseywoman living in Australia and keeping in contact with the island I am stunned and appalled that this issue has ever been raised let alone passed! On my last visit at Christmas I was hard pushed to even see a Jersey cow. The next visit it will no longer be “Jersey Cows”.
Lets hope at the next election Walker is finally voted out for good. Come on Jersey don’t be so apathetic and vote!!!

This again is nothing to do with Jersey pride (as he calls it).
I for one want cheaper milk but if it is going to destroy the heritage of the jersey Cow then is it worth the price?
