AS many as 8,200 new homes are likely to be built in the Island between now and 2035 to house up to 540 new immigrants a year.
That, according to the Council of Ministers, would be in line with what Islanders have indicated they want as part of the solution to the challenges thrown up by an ageing society. The outgoing Council has arrived at its conclusion after drawing together the findings of various consultation exercises during its time in office, in which Islanders were asked to decide how Jersey should meet one of the most difficult issues it faces.
The results of the whole process, including the Imagine Jersey consultations, have been summarised in a new report in which the Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker – who is not seeking re-election to the States in October – identifies what he thinks the priorities should be for his successor. As yet, no clear candidate has emerged to challenge Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur’s proposed elevation to the top job when the new States convene in December.
With the title Keeping Jersey Special, the ‘legacy’ document says that the States must balance the three pillars of policy – economical, social and environmental – if it is to keep its character as well as its standard of living. The key findings, which are proposed as the basis of future States strategy, are that Islanders do not want green fields to be swallowed up by development, that the economy should grow and become more productive, that people should retire up to four years later than now and that people must pay more in taxes and contributions.

No, it’s in line with how the few islanders who answered the loaded questions they were handed at the 2035 debate responded.
There’s a big difference between that and what “islanders” want.
But hey, when did the considerations of the majority of the public ever concern the Council of Ministers?
Those are the same Ministerse who ignored 20,000 signatures protesting against GST. Funny how when it’s what THEY want, the numbers mean something - no matter how small the pool they’re drawing their figures from.
Keep Jersey special - don’t make me laugh!!! the Members of the States of Jersey have managed to do what five years of occupation couldn’t, demoralise the people and denigrate Jersey in the eyes of the world.
Incidentally, has anyone looked up the word member in the dictionary, no surprise there then!!!!
The answer to combat the effects of a rising old age population can not be to simply increase the population, they in turn will age and make the situation much worse. This so called problem should have been foreseen and allowed for, surely these ‘old people’ have paid into the system all their working lives to provide for their retirement, so where is all the money?
The funny thing about this article is that they are SUPPOSEDLY looking to the future. The States “care” about the future what a load of rubbish - I’ve seen cats care more about killing rats! This is a joke, the reason why they propose all these idiocratic ideas is because they probably won’t be here in 2035 so it won’t effect them. Selfish, arrogant, egotistical members who only think with their wallets. I’m looking forward to this years elections and I am going to do everything I can to see that majority of islanders get out and vote for their’s and their children’s futures!
as an immigrant, where am I supposed to live until then?
Alex, as an immigrant perhaps you should have considered that before coming here. Or were you unaware that you would be unable to gain housing qualifications..?
Hardly believable. My Jersey of when I was a lad in the forties and fifties appeared ruined to me when I visited from Tasmania, Australia, a few years ago. Now it appears that it is going to get even worse. I hired a car for a fortnight but took it back after a day as it was pointless trying to drive and impossible to park. Dear me Jersey States members, please try and retain whatever is left of the beauty and atmosphere of the island and do not take it further down the path of ruin.
where are these houses going to be built soon the island will sink with the weight, maybe we should stop and think and provide low priced housing for our Jersey born families instead of building new houses for immagrants, what happened to the jersey man, his parents, his grandparents and family. Sorry there is not many of left I wonder why ??
The excuse that this is being done because of an ageing population is an insult - Jersey is to be covered with new 3 bedroom houses to house extra staff for the finance industry as it is now our only industry and it wants to expand. And what finance wants, it gets. This has always been on the cards, ever since the 70s when there was a building boom to house the first wave of bank workers. Now the second wave, then maybe a third or fourth? Hong Kong started as a fishing harbour surrounded by farms. If you vote in business men as politicians don’t be surprised if your home gets run (and sold) like a business. The only answer is to vote them out. Please. Before it’s too late and our exquisite little island is completely destroyed.
