Inferno ‘caused by spark in workshop’

00574704_cropped.jpgTHE Broadlands lodging house inferno was caused by a spark in a workshop, it was revealed today.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Johnson said that a spark from a grinding machine ignited flammable material within the workshop. The fire would have smouldered for some time before suddenly igniting and tearing through the building, he said.

The blaze – fuelled by exploding gas cylinders – destroyed tens of thousands of pounds of trucks and machinery at the recycling depot, as well as an adjoining lodging house and staff house used by many of the site workers.

Speaking to the JEP this morning, Mr Johnson said that they were able to piece together the cause of the fire without conducting a finger-tip search, which had been postponed because of safety fears.
