THE Portuguese Consul has made an emotional appeal to Islanders not to forget the victims of the Broadlands lodging house blaze.
Carlos Santos Costa has asked Islanders to dig deep and find cash to help them rebuild their lives. He said the generosity of Islanders has never been in doubt and described the £10,000 which was raised in just five days as overwhelming.
Tragedy struck a week ago today when the St Peter lodging house was gutted. More than 50 people were left homeless and around an additional 60 Islanders had to be evacuated from neighbouring properties. Mr Santos Costa said that the fire, which destroyed the building that many families called home and burnt everything they ever owned, was ‘catastrophic’.
‘This is why I would like to appeal to the community and our friends that, with your help, we can increase the donations already received by the Parish of St Peter. I am asking for the generosity of the banks, hotels, restaurants, clubs, supermarkets and others. Please, get together and collect funds to help those unfortunate families.’
