THE lengths the Germans went to when guarding the Island from other invaders during the Occupation have been revealed this week.
On hills with clear views of France and overlooked by Mont Orgueil castle, the police allowed the Jersey media the first close-up view of the network of bunkers and gun emplacements where forensic experts have been searching for evidence of child abuse during the 1970s and 1980s.
Police said earlier this week that nothing of significance in terms of the major inquiry into child abuse had been found in the bunkers, which are half a mile from Haut de la Garenne.
A number of people had alleged that they were abused there, and the police said that they had found some items which tended to corroborate these stories. Although the National Trust, who own the land on which the majority of bunkers are located, knew of the presence of this network because of information from the Channel Islands Occupation Society, trust chief executive Charles Alluto told the JEP that they were surprised at just how extensive the structures, which had been covered with earth and undergrowth, had been shown to be.
