THE tipping of hundreds of tonnes of soil and mud onto a St Brelade beach has potentially broken the Water Pollution Law.
The Environment Department has commented for the first time in response to the dumping of soil, mud and dirt by lorries over the edge of a private road at Les Creux, in between St Brelade’s Bay and Beauport.
A criminal investigation into the dumping is currently under way.
The Environment Department say that the actions have potentially infringed The Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005, The Food and Environmental Protection Act 1985 (Jersey), and the Water Pollution (Jersey) Law 2000.
The department is also considering whether the tipping was in contravention of the Convention on Dumping at Sea – a convention that contributes to the international control and prevention of marine pollution.
