NICK Saunders repeated his success of last year by winning the annual Ogier Jersey Triathlon yesterday.
However, winning the race in around two hours was clearly not enough, because after crossing the finishing line, the 24-year-old carried on running. Forty minutes later he was back at Bel Royal to explain why he did not stop when first he knew he had won.
‘I’m in training for the UK Ironman on 7 September,’ he explained. ‘If I do well in that I’ll qualify for the world Ironman, which is about four times this distance, in Hawaii. I’m a professional triathlete, so this, to me, is a much shorter distance.’ He was pushed for some of the way by French Division I triathlete Nicolas Tharreau, who placed second.
In the women’s race, Guernsey’s 42-year-old Gail Merrien was the comfortable winner. First-placed Jersey woman was Louise Meyer, who was fourth.
