Deputy in bid to close waste site

0128321_cropped.jpgTHE green waste dump at La Collette will be closed permanently if politicians back a proposal from St Clement Deputy Gerard Baudains.

He has lodged a proposition asking for support from States Members to close the composting facility, saying that residents who live nearby have suffered enough. He said that the residents, especially those at Havre des Pas, have had their lives blighted for three years by foul smells emanating from the site.

But the move will be opposed by Transport Minister Guy de Faye, who says that there is nowhere else to put the much-needed facility. About 1,000 tons a month of green waste is taken to La Collette and Deputy de Faye asked where this would go if the composting facility was shut. He said that a balance needed to be struck between the ‘small’ number of complaints and the ‘hundreds’ of Islanders who use the facility on a daily basis.

‘In fact, I believe the only complaint I have received this year has come from Deputy Baudains,’ he said.

They’ve all given up complaining because they know nothing will be done about it.
