JERSEY showed their intent when they defeated Croatia by seven wickets yesterday on the opening day of the ICC European Division II championship in Guernsey.
At a damp and gloomy College Field, Jersey had little trouble chasing down their opponents’ total of 126 for nine.
After winning the toss Croatia, who were making their Division II début, surprisingly decided to bat first on a slow wicket. Their top order looked capable but they never put their foot down to build a challenging total.
Going into the last ten overs they were 88 for four.
A short burst of torrential rain came down in between the innings, but that did not seem to make the track any more difficult for Jersey as openers Pete Gough and Chris Jones put on 89 for the first wicket. Left-hander Gough reached 51 before he was run out going for a fifth run off a cover drive from his brother Jonny.
