JERSEY beat both the rain and the French by 67 runs at Port Soif yesterday to stay on course for a title showdown with Guernsey on Saturday.
But as Jersey’s director of cricket, Chris Minty, was quick to recognise, it was neither easy nor comfortable on the coastal ground. ‘We had to work hard, and full marks to the French,’ said Minty. ‘They gave us a battle and we’re glad to have got through it.’
Chasing 189 for victory, France made a fine start and must have had Minty and Peter Kirsten, Jersey’s former Test-playing coach, a little concerned as they moved to 37 without loss after nine overs. But Anthony Kay, just 18, and Ryan Driver struck to turn the game on its head and with the aid of a direct-hit run-out – Jersey’s fielding was exemplary – they sent the French sliding to defeat.
