Jersey roars home GB’s flying doctor

hi_kayak-4_cropped.jpgFORMER Jersey doctor Tim Brabants has won Olympic gold for Great Britain.

The world champion canoeist took the title this morning in the 1,000m kayak finals finishing strongly ahead of Norway’s Eirik Veraas Larsen at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.

Brabants (31) worked at Jersey’s General Hospital for six months in 2005 and 2006 before he put his medical career on hold to train for Beijing 2008.

Earlier today staff at the A&E department clapped and cheered as they gathered around a television to watch their friend and former colleague win the race of his life.

Dr Carl Clinton said: ‘Luckily we had no one critically ill this morning so we were able to watch the race! I think a few of the patients wondered what was going on as there were lots of shouts and cheers. We knew he would medal in the 1,000m, certainly when he got to 500m we were confident he could hold on and he kept strong.’

Brabants is the current World and European Champion in the 1,000m event and won bronze in the Sydney Olympics, where he produced a superb last 250m to take the bronze, though he slipped to fifth place in Athens.
