The great escape

0628231_cropped.jpgJERSEY snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday to win the ICC Europe Division II championship from Guernsey by pipping them on the finishing line for a one-run victory.

And it was a sensational success for Jersey at the KGV Field because Guernsey were cruising to victory with only a few runs required and wickets in hand before Jersey used their get out of jail free card to spoil the Sarnians’ party.

Jersey will now have to play-off against Norway, who finished bottom of Division I, some time next year for the right to play in the top flight for the first time.

Jersey skipper Mathew Hague admitted that it was the biggest turn around in a game of cricket he has ever been involved in.

Hague said: ‘It was a crazy game. I thought our 218 was a pretty good effort and that it would be too much for Guernsey but they batted really well and they were cruising.

‘Sam Dewhurst and Peter Gough were bowling tidily when I decided to change it for the final five overs and bring back Anthony Kaye and Chris Jones.

‘I can hardly remember what happened from there on because everything happened so quickly. Chris and Anthony kept things tight, too, and we ended up getting four run-outs.
