Horwood has silverware in the bag at JRA Prize Meeting

bruce-horwood_cropped.jpgACE marksman Bruce Horwood left the Jersey Rifle Association’s Prize Meeting loaded down with silver after winning six competitions.

Jersey’s captain at the successful Bisley International in the summer, he maintained his overnight lead in the JRA’s Grand Aggregate in great style by winning the Shipstone Challenge Cup at 300 yards. He did so by achieving the rare feat of scoring a maximum 75.15, despite being under extreme pressure.

Horwood followed that up by scoring 74 out of 75 in the next two competitions to secure the overall top prize.
The standard of the meeting was underlined by every single competition being won by a shooter achieving a maximum score. Bisley is regarded worldwide as the Mecca for rifle shooters, but even scores achieved there would not have bettered the standards seen in Jersey during the meeting.

Such was the standard in depth, no one shooter dominated. The Gallichan Challenge Cup at 500 yards featured 12 shooters achieving maximum scores, with Adam Mayers of the British Universities winning with 75.13 after winning a tie-shoot with Cliff Mallett. The Macartney, fired at 600 yards, had eight shooters achieving the maximum, with Chris Cotillard taking the trophy with 75.12 in his first full day of shooting at the meeting.

Colin Mallett won the final of the Jersey VIII, while another notable achievement was Barry Le Cheminant’s in finishing second in the Grand Aggregate having just returned to shooting after a break of many years. Third position in the Grand Aggregate went to Guernsey’s Richard Perkins, in his first Jersey Prize Meeting.
