ADRIAN Walsh, a business intelligence analyst, will stand in the elections for Senator next month.
Mr Walsh (43) is a resident of St Helier and works for a large banking group. He has a background in IT and is the administrator of the website www.-planetjersey.co.uk on which some Islanders discuss political issues.
This will be his second attempt to be elected as a Senator. He stood in 2002 and 2005. Mr Walsh said that, if elected, he would aim to alter legislation to provide more help to small businesses. He wants to see a huge reduction in the amount of red tape they have to contend with.
He is particularly keen to make it easier for small businesses to recruit young Islanders who were not academically strong at school. The father of two young children also intends to work to create a more family-oriented social structure to improve housing, childcare and after-school activities for families.
Mr Walsh said that he was opposed to GST when he stood in 2002 and continues to be against the tax.‘I believe there is an alternative method of raising that money,’ he said. He said that States accounting policies were not transparent and not all income received was shown in the way it should be.
‘They are working toward the GAAP principles but they are not in place. Currently some income that is received is shown as net on the accounts but you cannot see what the gross amount has been spent upon,’ he said.
