Batsman hit form to lift the gloom in Tanzania

johnny-gough_cropped.jpgNORMAL service was resumed in Tanzania yesterday as Jersey won their first match in the ICC World Cricket League Division IV by 79 runs against basement boys Fiji.

At last the Island’s top order batsmen all scored runs and the victory leaves Jersey with a glimmer of hope of avoiding relegation.

At the least Jersey will have to beat Hong Kong tomorrow and then hope other results go their way, including Italy beating Tanzania today, and, if they do, it would then depend on the run-rates of the nations who finish on the same points.

Jersey manager Chris Minty said: ‘Yesterday’s win has lifted the team so much; it was great to see them playing sensibly and batting well again. There has been tension because losing has created serious doubts among the players that they may not be good enough to be playing at this level.
