Islanders to ‘own’ mobile numbers

00477966_cropped.jpgISLANDERS will be able to change mobile phone companies and take their existing numbers with them from next month.

It has been confirmed by the telecoms regulator that mobile number portability will become a reality on 1 December and Islanders will effectively own their number after that date.

And it is likely to signal phone wars between Jersey Telecom, Airtel Vodafone and Sure mobile as they battle for customers in the run-up to Christmas.

For those who switch operator, it will take two days to complete the exercise but it will be a free service, with the phone companies picking up the bill.

Whoo-hoo – role on number portability.

I hope all JT users abandon them in droves and head to either Sure or Airtel. For way too long JT have charged extorniate prices for handsets in particular – handsets that UK users get for free! JT have relied far to heavily on their “easy on the eye” 77977 code as being the main reason why people have not gone elsewhere.

Yep ain’t that the truth AJ. Will be moving on straight away to get a decent handset and hopefully lose the roaming charges when I tracel to the UK ….

I for one will stick with JT. Better covrage, better customer care and all the profit goes back into the island. AJ you have to look at the bigger picture, O2 orange and carphone warehouse have a bigger market to offer their service to.
I was with one of the other operators but went back to JT simply becasue of the service I got.

don’t you still pay your ‘line rental’ to jersey telecoms anyway irrespective of who your service provider is…

i thought we had a competition regulatory board..

I will also be staying with JT, Their coverage and shop staff are better and once you have shopped around prices are very similar. Also Airtel and Sure are offshore companies that are taking there money out of the island which is useless to our economy!!

I moved to C&W a while ago, the roaming charges and reception in Europe is much better than JT and I can confirm that comparision because I took both phones.

JT’s customer service is second to none and they have great roaming, I will be staying.
The other networks are just trying to bribe you with massive discounts but no quality.

I will definately staying with JT you can tell the quality of service by the amount of customers they have in their shop compared to the other network shops. i had a complicated issue with my phone, spent an hour with one of the guys from the JT shop, that shows the dedication that the JT staff have to help their customers.

I can’t wait to change over, I think we have been paying far too much for phone services in Jersey for too long. I am thankful we now have competition and I can keep my number.

heh how many of these posters work or have friends and family that work for JT ? Most people want first and foremost cheaper calls and handsets and JT does not deliver on either.

There is something fishy going on here. People who get the option of cheaper calls and a cheaper service are hardly going to stick with the most expensive under these economic conditions.

    Vodafone for me now.

I will go where i can get the most for my £9.99 per month. But as for JT, while for certain people will leave and dip thier toes in fresh water, over in Gurnsey Wave (JT) will be welcoming new customers from Cable and Wireless. Swings and Roundabouts. The regulators on both islands have to make sure that the major supplier keeps their prices higher than thier competitors.

JT roaming in France is absolutely useless and they really need to up their game, especially their broadband speeds which are shockingly poor. JT have been ripping us off for years and the biggest irony is that we own them! a state monopoly in this little bubble of post-Thatcherite Britain. Ho ho ho – get rid.

Hooray! I’ll be first in line to leave JT, they ripped us off for years when they had the monopoly, not just with their extreme prices but with their audacity in charging massive “admin fees” for such simple tasks as changing address.
They took us all for idiots and now I expect a LOT of people will be voting with their feet come December 1st.

Just to clarify for those who are not aware – this only applies to MOBILE telephone numbers. Landlines will all remain on JT as no other provider can offer this service so charges for moving house and landline rental for your house phone will stay the remain.

I moved to Sure the day they opened their doors for business. I have saved on average £120 per year compared to my old JT contract. The customer service has been….? I don’t know, because I have not had to use them. That says it all really.
