JERSEY’S overseas aid money has helped to save the sight of almost a million Bangladeshis.
At meetings last week to decide where the £6m Overseas Aid Commission budget would go, the Impact Foundation told commissioners that 970,000 cataract operations had been funded through Jersey donations to Bangladesh.
And the commission were invited to a reception by Unicef — the United Nations children’s charity — to thank them for millions of pounds worth of aid handed out over the years.
Commission member Geoffrey Crill said that 60 agencies had presented almost 400 projects for funding, and that the commission had faced difficult decisions on where to send money. He added that they had resolved to continue supporting the work of the Impact Foundation, but had not decided on the amounts.
