Jersey RFC managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by losing to Bishop’s Stortford 18-16 yesterday with the very last kick of the match.
Afterwards coach Ben Harvey (pictured) was almost ‘too gutted’ to talk about the game, a game which maintains Bishop Stortford’s unbeaten home run this season but a win that even their chairman, Perry Oliver, believed was out of their reach with less than a minute to go.
‘For the last 15 minutes Jersey were camped on our try-line and I thought it was just a case of when they scored, not if,’ he said afterwards. ‘I was so sure that they’d win that I’d walked off and was cleaning up the glasses when I was told what had happened.
‘I thought it was all done and dusted. When I saw (Jersey’s) captain he was so frustrated he was almost in tears. But that’s rugby for you. It has a habit of throwing up the unexpected, although we had defended well.’
