Jersey’s Alan Shaw opened his account in the Atlantic singles bowls championship in Johannesburg yesterday with a magnificent win over Namibian Johan Jacobs.
He then came close to beating the host country’s hope, the legendary South African, Gerry Baker.
At 4-4 after five ends, there was no hint of what was to come, when Shaw took on Jacobs, but the Jersey player took control and dominated proceedings such an extent that he dropped only two more shots on his way to a 21-6 victory.
After lunch, Shaw returned to the green to face local favourite Baker, who has been the Springboks’ singles regular representative at World Bowls and Commonwealth Games. But, after a close contest, Shaw lost 21-19.
