Buddhist meditation just across the water

ISLANDERS will have another opportunity to explore meditation in a Buddhist tradition at a weekend retreat near Dinan in June.

There are strong Jersey connections with the retreat centre at La Ville Davy, a group of former farm buildings converted to their new purpose by Mo and Peter Henderson, who until recently combined their activities there with work as psychotherapists for the Jersey Health Service.

Both are practising Buddhists and, following retirement, are now devoting more time to the development of La Ville Davy, where many Jersey residents have already experienced the serenity and spiritual stimulus to be found at the rural centre.

A Buddhist weekend retreat from Friday 26 June to Sunday 28 June will be led by Rev Master Myfanwy McCorry, a senior monk of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives from the Dargon Bell Temple, Exeter. The theme will be Buddhist Training and the Precepts and the weekend offers an opportunity to experience meditation as the foundation for everyday life, with beginners welcome.

Classes will explore how engagement with the precepts of Buddhism can influence all aspects of life, underpinned by the development of mindfulness, which is the common thread between the Hendersons’ work in Jersey and their practice in the Serene Reflection (Soto Zen) tradition of Buddhism.
