Credit card fraud threat bigger than first feared

HUNDREDS of Islanders have been exposed to opportunist fraudsters after shops printed their full bank account details on credit card receipts.

Last week the JEP reported that several Islanders contacted the Data Protection Commissioner after stores failed to replace the details with asterisks. Since the report was printed, more than 200 shoppers have contacted the office saying that they, too, had their personal details printed on receipts.

Emma Martins, data protection commissioner, said: ‘I have been genuinely amazed at the number of calls we have received. This is obviously a much bigger problem than we originally thought.’

Many shops have been printing the customers’ names and full card numbers on receipts. Mrs Martins has urged shoppers who have been affected to complain directly to the store. She said: ‘I want to encourage people to challenge the shop if they believe too much information has been printed.

These would be exactly the same details that are stamped on the card itself then and could be written down or memorised by anyone you gave your credit card to to pay a bill. Obviously it’s better if these details aren’t printed on the receipt but where exactly is the “credit card fraud threat”?

and still it goes on, a couple of days ago i was in a well known supermarket outlet and used my card, the reciept that i left with had all the numbers blanked apart from the last four.
but the reciept that went in the till had the full card number on and my signature.
it was a old type swipe thru card reader. not chip and pin.
did bring it to the attention of the nice lady behind the till , who shrugged her shoulders as to say “you could take it up with management, but save your breath”

its not as if this supermarket and its outlets are not making any profits from the likes of you and me.
lets hope these card details are destroyed in a correct manner and not left for the pickings

You don’t get this problem if you pay by cash!!!

I understand that the retailers copy always has the customers full numbers on without asterisks – so if a business throws out old receipts with the rubbish who know how can get your details?

I am obviously not allowed to name a certain store but there is a chain of convenience stores that I know some (if not all) print the full card details on the receipt.
