Let nature take its course

From June Beslièvre.
I AM totally lost at the contradictions coming from Dr Rosemary Geller, Medical Officer of Health, regarding swine flu precautions and the pyramid effect that takes place when one person is diagnosed.

When one person has swine flu their contacts also are given Tamiflu – to prevent them getting the illness? Plus the contacts of the contact – as in the case of Les Quennevais School – where the first contact didn’t even get the flu.

Yet we are told that Tamiflu, which has been stockpiled at a huge cost, will not prevent the disease and this is just a precautionary measure until an anti-virus has been produced and we can all be inoculated against this.

Now we are told that even travelling to the UK, Canada and Australia as well as the USA and Mexico, could put us in mortal danger and we must stay indoors for 48 hours on return to the Island. Who is going to tell visitors they mustn’t bring their children to the Island unless they are willing to keep them in the hotel for 48 hours?

What is wrong with nature taking its course? Maybe we would prefer to have it now when the outbreak is a very mild one and, who knows, we may be the lucky ones and build up a resistance to the next batch which we are told could be worse in the autumn.

Yes it is very sad that a few people have lost their lives, mainly because they had other health problems, but that shouldn’t impact on those who want the freedom to choose life with all its ups and downs.

The trouble with Public Health is they have to cover their backs in a climate where they can get sued for every little thing that goes wrong.

Sadly, so much of life today with its instructions to us that we can’t do this or mustn’t do that, is taking the pleasure of a normal living away from us.

I would far rather sign a piece of paper absolving them from any comeback than stuff myself with Tamiflu tablets.
