Jersey’s X-File: What flew above St Ouen in 1993?

CAN any Islanders help solve a UFO mystery, 13 years after it happened?

The case, which involved a scared woman camping with her husband in St Ouen, is included in a bundle of secret documents released by the UK government, documenting UFO sightings between 1981 and 1996.

All names and telephone numbers are blacked out, but the headed letters show a course of correspondence between a visitor to the Island, the Airport and the Ministry of Defence in September 1993.

The first letter is from a tourist who wrote to the Airport to recount her chilling experience. She writes that while camping at St Ouen, she was woken by a strange noise at 3.45 am.

‘I thought it was the gas cylinder bubbling,’ her letter reads, ‘but that wasn’t making any sound. I find it very hard to describe the noise – a sort of glomping, bubbling, squelching sound. It seemed to be travelling up and down between the tents. I finally plucked up the courage to look outside, but I couldn’t see anything.’

The writer then describes a ‘square of pink light’ shining down on the roof of the tent. ‘I was unsure, excited and afraid,’ she writes, ‘I am convinced it was a UFO’.

The second letter is from the Airport director, who wrote to the woman to confirm that there were no aircraft in the sky at the time.

UFOs are common sightings especially down range from tank ranges; very fast flashes of light or the slow decent of illuminating munitions. More common are the sight of strange flashing lights associated with military helicopters flying nap of the earth; difficult to either see or hear. Make nice crop circles too.

This is August and the height of the silly season. A JEP silly season story? Alarmed? Not me.

This story is strange, all because when i read the headline i recognised something.
This was also in 1993 and in september, It was just after the Air display, I was on my friends roof which is on the same road as st ouens estate, it was around 6pm. We were letting off cap bombs from the roof into his garden when all of a sudden from out of nowhere a pink ball of light shot across the sky! it was very low and had a white tail coming off it, it had a small amount of sound which was strange as the item was quite big, roughly the size of a bus but circular in shape.

I was reading on BBC News that in 1994 around the time the film “Independence Day” came out, the plot of which revolves around alien invaders, there was a huge spike in the number of UFO sightings… still we should never fault people for their imagination! NJ.

It probably was a UFO. As soon as the aliens heard how steep Jersey’s landing taxes are, they shot off

Aliens are welcome in Jersey providing they inhabit overpriced sub standard accommodation
( ideally a bedsit ) for 20 years and pay off in full their landlords mortgage before being permitted to purchase their own property.

Come and join our multi cultural intergalactic community but keep your mouth shut, don’t mention racism or equality and for Gods sake don’t complain about anything – or you’ll be told in no uncertain terms that there’s a spaceship out in the morning!

Acouple of months back myself and a friend and a woman who lives at Archrondel saw an orange round object in the sky, had made its was in from the sea by Jeffreys Leap! As we watched this object it hovered above properties in St Martin but instead of the object moving left or right, it went straight up into some cloud then disappeared.

A UFO landed twice in Jersey however it was unsucessfull due to the following events.
The best kept “secret” is that the ufo landed “secretly” in the Royal square & was greeted by various members of the states.

This meeting between the aliens & the states was unsucessfull,as the aliens couldnt understand what the states members were talking about & accused them of talking rubbish.

On the second ocassion the spacecraft landed in a Jersey farmers field. However when the alien came to disembark the farmer said “you cant park yer”
Hence they dissapeared in a pink light in search of a pink camp site.

It doesn’t look good, however, do people rally give a damn as long as they are alright at this very moment? The use of the word ‘UFO’ has been misused within social and media circles for many years. A UFO is an airborn object that by appearance or performance does not match any known other airborne object to the witness or witnesses! There is nothing whatsoever to class or deem the UFO seen as a piloted alien vessel.

In the days of the research group, many reported sightings of aircraft aproaching Jersey Airport from the north and seen from the St Clements bay area were reported to us as UFO sightings. Even when the persons reporting the sighting to us were shown our research findings, and also of other sighting with all the hallmarks of their own, they refused to accept our findings.

There was one classic nightime sighting in the late 90’s which got high local media attention, and i proved in an interview on Radio Jersey with the aid of a simple planasphere that what was infact witnessed was nothing more than stars seen during a night unusual weather conditions.

There was however in the island a handfull of UFO sightings that had no possible explanation, from one seen by two people in the La Collette power chimney area, to another witnessed both in Jersey and Guernsey.

On the many skywatch evenings that we held in the late 90’s, accompanied with a group of 4 other members I witnessed a spectacular display of dancing lights at an extreemly high vertical altitude. Although to this day I have no explanation for this sighting, I still concluded that what was witnessed was a UFO-UFO’s because due to their behaviour they did not fit into any known airborne object known to us, but at the same time, I know that what we all saw could not be proved to be an alien piloted vessel.

Hey, man, back in the 70’s me and a few of the guys were camping out at St Ouen’s and at 5am we were woken by a bright light outside our the tent. There was this weird tweeting noise, like the birds were getting all spooked, and the sea had come across the beach like it was being sucked over the land by some strange force. Scary stuff.

So we were like transfixed by this huge ball of fire in the sky bathing the world in light man. ‘Stretch’ had a VW Camper with a beer cooler so we cracked a few, lit a fire and did a wild mushroom omelette. After that, the ball of fire in the sky got really big and the crashing of the waves being sucked over the wall was so loud!

But Stretch’s beer was cool and the girls did the dishes; we just sat and watched this big ball of fire all day, drinking Stretch’s beer, smoking, and the girls danced in the light of the fire in the sky. About midday the sea disappeared as the magical force pulled the water another way. All the time the fire moved across the sky and in the end was swallowed by the water god that lived behind La Rocco Tower.

We had been visited by an awesome power that had burned our skin red and blistered as we lay smoking ,drinking and eating mushrooms in St Ouen’s Bay that day. It must have been the radiation, man, from that spaceship. Cool.
