Sunday shopping is already well established in Jersey over the Christmas period
When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in future, shop opening will be restricted as if it were a Sunday, the States decided yesterday.
However, the amendment put forward by Deputy Andrew Green, and approved by 34 votes to 13, will not mean any change this year. The States have already decided that the Boxing Day bank holiday this year should move to Monday 28 December, with Saturday 26 December remaining as a normal Saturday trading day.
The amendment was put forward during a debate on the biggest shake-up of Sunday trading laws for 50 years. Members voted this morning to scrap the lists of goods which can and cannot be sold on Sundays and to bring in a system that allows parish Constables to decide which shops can open.
Approval of the proposals, put forward by Assistant Economic Development Minister Len Norman, will mean an end to the arbitrary lists that prevent the sale of flowers or the hiring of videos on a Sunday. Restrictions will apply on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Liberation Day and Good Friday.

Pointless – where I work most shops can open sunday all day anyway. One of our few days off has now been thrown away, Thanks a bunch!!!!!

Pathetic…and on top of this all shops MUST remain closed on Christmas Day. Who are these people who impose their moral and religious beliefs to ban on what any other day is perfectly acceptable??

Why did this years decision become such a fiasco for them to realise that this was the logical way forward. Could they not have anticipated that this would have been necessary?
