JERSEY’S trade links with India could be advanced when a group of finance experts visit Mumbai and New Delhi next week.

The delegation, which includes Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf, Jersey Financial Services Commission director general John Harris and Jersey Finance chief executive Geoff Cook, will meet Indian contacts established during a previous visit in March.

They plan to discuss furthering trade connections and explore treaty opportunities with the Indian government. There will be presentations, one-to-one meetings and receptions with Indian government officials, regulators and trade organisations.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr Cook said that the trip would develop Jersey’s commercial ties with India. ‘We are going to look at furthering trade connections,’ he said. ‘We are going to have exploratory talks with the Indian government about furthering trade co-operation between India and Jersey, particularly in the software industry.’

Oh , you just have to love it don’t you?
Here we are, mid recession, and another jolly for the lads for “exploratory talks with the Indian government …………… particularly in the software industry”
What on earth can Jersey offer the Indian software industry?
Obviously at a later stage more serious talks and doubtless further free holidays, sorry, business trips are planned.
Pass the naan bread, it aint half hot Phil.

    Spring Healed Jack,

What do you think the finance industry depends on heavily? Software. Indian company’s such as Infrasoft, who now have offices in Jersey thanks to these meetings, provide financial software packages to the many banks in Jersey.

Not wasted time or money at all

    Absolutely agree with you Jub.
A lot of people in Jersey just look at what they want in a news story and form some automatic negative perspective. As a university student and someone who has travelled, I have never experienced such determined pessimism anywhere else. Frankly, even if it was another free holiday, I wouldn’t mind as long as there was some credible benefit to the island’s economy. Jersey, read the facts of the story and STOP MOANING!

So does this mean JEC, Jersey Gas or Jersey Water will get indian call centres.

It is these trips that persuaded Airtel to open up in Jersey and give more competition. A number of Indian companies are interested in using Jersey as a gateway into Europe. This is a real opportunity and a s possible diversification of our economy.

A lot of us work very hard trying to bring business to the Island that pays the salaries that pays the taxes that pays for the services…how about you stop knocking us all in the finance industry!

It would be great if we had a more diversified economy but we don’t and that goes back to decisions over 30 years ago not just recently but many of us are trying to bring new business from wider afield to help the Island.

Everyone needs to accept the reality and stop biting the hand that feeds you!
