Stop duty rises on alcohol and fuel!

The proposal is to increase the duty on a litre of spirits by 6.2% to £9.95

MASSIVE duty increases on fuel, alcohol and cigarettes must be stopped, insists Deputy Sean Power.

The Assistant Housing Minister has tabled an amendment to the Budget which would stop planned duty rises of almost 10% on fuel and tobacco and a 6.2% rise in alcohol duty.

Deputy Power says it is better for the States to absorb an extra £4.25m deficit than to ‘hammer’ Islanders already struggling through a recession.

‘The increases proposed in the Budget are not modest, they are excessive,’ he said. ‘The Island has escaped the worst ravages of the global recession and credit squeeze, but the cost of living for Islanders, particularly for hard-working and tax-paying “middle Jersey” who are finding it difficult to make ends meet, is already high.

‘This is particularly so with regard to families, those with a dependent relative, those with children at university and those with a mortgage.’

“…You need your car to go to work…”
Factually incorrect, no I don’t, and nor do the vast majority.

“…unless you are alcoholic you don’t need booze to get to work…”
Factually incorrect, I needed booze for my last job, and while I no longer do the guy doing that job now does.

“…the general public deserve a refund on the cost to them of Government which is plainly not fit for purpose…”
The general public got the government they voted for, maybe they should do a better job at the next election; or maybe only those that voted for unsuccessful candidates should be refunded?
