Rennes’ raid rewarded

Rennes full-back Antoine Martinat makes his way to the Jersey line, with Tom Ellis and Stephen de Ste Croix in pursuit

Jersey’s Youth team, including the charging Aiden Maguire, had a fair but very dirty game of rugby against French side Rennes on Saturday

ON a wet and muddy pitch  at St Peter on Saturday the Jersey RFC Youth team lost to Rennes 24-17.

A late try from the visitors’ star full-back Antoine Martinat, his second of the game, sealed a double victory for the French, Rennes having also beaten Jersey, at home, in September.

The quality of the Brittany team is such that they are the only blemishes in an otherwise perfect Jersey record, which now stands at ten wins from from 12 games.

But, despite that, coach Mick Mayo believes Jersey lost badly, through a lack of discipline. ‘The pack played tremendously well. The front three were unbelievable. Colossal. But the threes, outside scrum-half Dan McAviney, were in a different world. To put it bluntly, they didn’t even come out of their starting blocks.’
